Why do nearly 20,000
High School Seniors fail the reading FCAT even after 3 or 4 intensive reading
classes in the state of Florida? (17% pass rate)
Thesis:
There are 4 reasons:
Thinking and questioning correctly, overcoming
boredom, adjusting to an author's style, and avoiding frustration.
Investigation
/Overview/Solution
The first investigation
was with 3 seniors for 5 weeks
for an average pullout of 5 one hour sessions for 66% pass rate. The second
investigation was with 10 seniors for 5 weeks for an
average pullout of 7 one hour sessions for a 60% pass rate. The 3rd
sessions had 30 students for 10 weeks for an average of 13 pull outs for an 82 %
pass rate. The state average for these same kids is 17 % and the
county was 25%
-
The initial screening was
the results of their previous reading tests. It is important at this time
that students see the benefits of
the investigation and how it applies to them.
-
Reading Check was administered to determine what students are doing and thinking as
they read and answer questions. It will assist in determining which of
the 4 areas of the thesis needs improvement and practice.
-
Then an individual plan for the
students was made. It was based on the thesis items that the
student had difficulty with.
Strategies
for Reading Success by Steven Jantzen from his book READING TO GRADUATE
should be a basis for the plan.

-
I created an extensive program called reading to graduate
based to
provide a leveled reading and assessment to practice the 4 strategies above
for each student each
student needs. Reading
