Help For Area and Perimeter

• Area is about squares or covering.
  • Example:  How many square feet  in a circle with a radius of 6 feet?
  • Example:  How much rug will it take to cover a room 15 feet by 10 feet?
• Perimeter is about the distance around a figure or surface
  • Example:  What is the distance around  (perimeter)  a rectangle 20 ft. by 30 ft.
• Solve  
  1. Determine if the problem is area or perimeter.
  2. Write down the formula for the problem.
  3. Write the numbers under the formula.

• ExampleA rectangular flower bed below measures 20.5 meters by 19.5 meters. Jill wants to determine the area of the walkway around the flower bed so she can paint it. If the walkway is 1.5 meters wide, how many square meters is the walkway?

1. Determine if the problem is area or perimeter. (it asks for: area, covering with paint, and square feet)
   • This is an area problem. 
2. Write down the formula for the problem. ( a formula sheet will be provided when taking the FCAT  Area  or Perimeter)    
   • Rectangle     L ( W)
3. Write the numbers under the formula. this problem has 2 area problems (the difference between the large and small rectangle)
