Mean-Medium-Mode
Mean (Average) Is found by adding all the numbers and dividing by the number of numbers.
Example: What is the mean of the numbers 3,7,9,11,4 ?
Add the numbers and divide by the number of numbers. -- 3+7+9+11+5= 35 = 7--the average 5
Meduim- When numbers are ranked from least to greatest the medium is the middle number.
Example: For odd number of numbers that are ranked the middle number is the medium. 3,7,8,11,12 The median is 8.
Example: For even number of number that are ranked the median is half way between the 2 middle numbers.
3,8,10, 12,14, 17, Add the 2 middle numbers and divide by 2..
10 + 12 = 22 = 11 is the medium.

Mode: Is the number that occurs most frequently in a series of numbers.
Example: 2,4,1,9,4 4 is the mode.
Example: 2,4,5,3,8 There is no mode.
Example: 2,4,8,10,4,2 This example has 2 modes 2+4.
Range: Is the difference between the biggest number and the smallest number.
Example: 4,2,11,14,6, 14-2 = 12 is the range
Problem Example:Carolyn practices her piano for 1 and 3/4 hours each day, 5 days a week. How many hours must she practice on the sixth day in order to average 2 hours per day? Round to the nearest hundreth
- This is a mean (average) type problem.
- 2(6) = 12 hours is what she needs to practice for the 6 days to average 2 hours per day.
- 5(1 3/4 or 1.75) = what she has practiced so far.
- Subtract 12 from this number for the answer.
